Released ahead of its time, Final Fantasy 9 came out in an awkward period when gamers were obsessed with the next step towards realistic graphics and edgy media for teens.

So when Square returned to their roots with a typical fantasy premise and cute stylized art direction it's no wonder that sales weren't expected despite receiving critical acclaim.

However real FF fans to this day know 9 was a true gem of an experience and lived up to being the last installment of the PS1 era.
